WHAT SCOOTER OR WHEELCHAIR DO I NEED?

First you need to decide on what you require the scooter or wheelchair to do – is it to put in the car for shopping trips only, or to take you for a few short rides on the promenade, or would you like to go a few miles into town and back? Or perhaps a major day out – up to 35 miles of travel?

It is also important to think about storage, secure and humidity. Portable scooters are often kept in the vehicle until needed, but it is advisable to insure them separately as most car insurance will not cover this in the event of theft.

A scooter or electric wheelchair can enable a great return to independence for you and your family – trips to the Doctor, the library or supermarket no longer require assistance and forward planning. No more waiting to be collected, or having to ask someone to assist with shopping, when you’ve just forgotten the milk! Days out can be planned, to County Shows, car boot sales, markets, or the Zoo, trips to church – or the pub - are all enabled as and when you wish. You are independant again! The list is endless.

Once you have decided what you want your scooter to do for you, where you would like it to take you, the choice comes down to:

1. Portable, for short trips and shopping centres. These will travel on good surfaces up to 12 miles, depending on your choice, and have small batteries which are charged off-board as a rule. Designed for shopping and short trips on good surfaces, pavement only use.
2. Class 2 scooters Some have suspension, some have captain’s seats, others are simpler and less expensive to purchase. Some are more suited to hills than others (please ask for advice) and are suitable for different weights of user and different range of travel. Most of these are charged on-board.
3. Class 3, 8 mph large road going scooters, with power, comfort and range for the longer day out – or the quicker trip to the shops! Almost replaces the car…
