Motability is the leading “car” scheme for disabled people – but this now extends also to wheelchair and mobility scooter users under the title Motability Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme, - their slogan is “Where will you go today ! "

The Motability Scheme was launched in 1977, and has helped over 400,000 disabled people and their families enjoy increased freedom and independence via their mobility scooter or wheelchair – either with a portable mobility scooter to transport by car, coach, rail or plane, or with a larger more powerful pavement mobility scooter – or indeed an 8 mph road going mobility scooter!

The Motability Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme offers an extensive range of products, including mobility scooters, powered wheelchairs, and accessories.  The wide range of approved products is of the highest standard or workmanship and is designed for ease of use. 

To be eligible for the Motability Scheme, you must be in receipt of one of the following benefits, and have at least 12 months of the ward remaining when you apply:

1. Higher Rate Mobility Component of the disability Living Allowance. Or
2. War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.

You can CHECK YOUR ELIGIBILITY by calling either the

1. Department of Work and Pensions on 0845 712 3456 (for the Disability Living Allowance) OR
2. Veterans Agency, 0800 169 2277 – for War Pensioners Mobility Allowance
3. When using the scheme, part of your mobility allowance will be paid straight to Route2Mobility to meet the monthly cost of your agreement – the remainder will be paid to you in the usual way.

The cost of your mobility scooter purchase depends on the choice of mobility scooter selected, and there are a choice of payment options and durations to adapt to your needs.

Payment Schemes:

1. Contract Hire – a monthly payment covers maintenance, insurance and breakdown of your mobility scooter, along with tyre and battery replacements.  The mobility scooter is returned at the end of the agreed period with no further cost involved.
2. Hire Purchase.  If you prefer to own your mobility scooter at the end of the payment term, you can choose to make payments for a period of between one and three years.  This will include the mobility scooter’s manufacturer’s warranty for at least one year, but you will need to pay for any additional insurance or services required – please ask for more details.

Motability is the national charity that directs the purchase of your mobility scooter or wheelchair through the Scheme.

Route2mobility is the company that operates the scheme under contract to Motability and organises the purchase of your mobility scooter on your behalf.  Only a select number of Accredited Dealers are licenced under the Scheme, and are trained and competent to assess the individual  needs of the mobility scooter/wheelchair user accurately.
